Via’s Position Statement on Uber, Lyft and Ride-Share Companies Noncompliance with the ADA

Boulder, CO – Via Mobility Services, a Boulder based private, nonprofit organization, is aware of lawsuits against ride-share companies like Uber and Lyft contending that they are noncompliant with ADA by not ensuring equal access for persons with disabilities who are blind or in wheelchairs. Specifically, these ride-share companies do not make provisions in their apps for accessibility or for requesting accessible vehicles.

In response to an article “Uber and Lyft and Disability Access – Do They Care?” by Rich Cohen in the Nonprofit Quarterly, Via asks Uber, Lyft, and other ride-share companies to find immediate solutions in the communities they drive in and to comply with ADA guidelines by providing equal access for persons with disabilities.

Founded in 1979, Via provides on-demand paratransit services, travel training, and mobility options information and referral for people living with mobility limitations. In 2014, Via served over 3,000 individuals in 19 communities across five counties in Colorado.
