Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD)

Give in a way that gives back.

If you are age 70½ or older, you can make a tax-free gift to Via Mobility Services directly from your IRA through a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). A QCD is a nontaxable distribution from your IRA paid directly to an eligible charity.

At a Glance

A QCD can help you:

  • Reduce taxable income by keeping the distribution out of your income
  • Satisfy all or part of your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD), if applicable
  • Support safe, reliable transportation for older adults and people with disabilities in our community

Important: The distribution must go directly from your IRA to Via Mobility Services, not to you first.

How to Make a QCD Gift

  1. Contact your IRA custodian
Request their Qualified Charitable Distribution form or instructions.
  2. Provide Via’s information
    Via Mobility Services
    2855 63rd Street
Boulder, CO 80301Federal Tax ID: 84-0777296Ask your custodian to make the distribution payable directly to Via Mobility Services.

Good to Know

  • If a check is mailed to you
It must still be payable to Via Mobility Services.
  • Include your contact information
Providing your name and mailing address allows us to send an acknowledgment of your gift.
  • Plan ahead
To count for the current tax year, the distribution generally must be completed by December 31. Processing times vary, so start early.

Eligibility & Key Rules

  • You must be age 70½ or older at the time of the gift.
  • QCDs must come from an IRA (not typically from employer plans such as a 401(k) unless rolled into an IRA first).
  • In 2026, individuals may give up to $110,000 per year through a QCD.

Your Records

If you share your name and mailing address, Via Mobility Services will send a written acknowledgment confirming your QCD gift. Please note that your IRA custodian handles all tax reporting and will issue Form 1099-R. We recommend consulting your tax advisor regarding how to report your QCD.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not withdraw the funds first and then write a personal check
  • Do not wait until late December, when processing delays may occur
  • You do not get a second tax deduction for a QCD—it’s already excluded from your income

Together, we keep our community moving.

Your gift provides safe, reliable transportation for older adults and people with disabilities—help us ensure everyone can get where they need to go.

FAQ

Can my QCD count toward my Required Minimum Distribution (RMD)?

Often, yes—if you are required to take an RMD, a QCD can satisfy all or part of it. (Via Mobility Services)

Can I make a QCD if I don’t itemize deductions?

Yes—QCDs can provide a tax benefit even if you take the standard deduction. (IRS)

Can spouses both make QCDs?

If each spouse has an IRA, each can make their own QCD (subject to the annual limit). (Colorado Gives Foundation)

Can I Name a Charity as My IRA Beneficiary?

A nonprofit can be named as the beneficiary of your IRA, allowing your retirement funds to support meaningful work in the future. This choice is an easy and powerful way to leave a lasting legacy aligned with your values.

Can I use a SEP (Simplified Employee Pension Plan) or SIMPLE IRA for a QCD?

Sometimes. It depends on whether the account is still active. Check with your IRA provider or tax advisor to confirm. (IRS)
