Frank Bruno’s life is a profound testament to resilience, compassion, and the transformative power of human connection. A former marathon runner who thrived on pushing his limits, Frank’s world shifted dramatically due to a series of spinal surgeries that tested his physical and emotional endurance. These experiences not only changed his perspective on independence but became the foundation for his life’s work as the CEO of VIA Mobility Services, an organization dedicated to providing mobility solutions that restore dignity, independence, and opportunity.
A Mission Inspired by Experience
Frank’s personal struggles with immobility deeply shaped his understanding of independence as more than just physical freedom—it’s a lifeline to identity and self-worth. Reflecting on the challenges of depending on others for simple tasks like driving or running errands, he often shares, “It wasn’t just about mobility; it was about reclaiming who I was.” This profound insight fuels his leadership at VIA, where the mission is clear: to connect individuals—whether stroke survivors, older adults, or those with disabilities—with the freedom to live fulfilling lives.
“VIA doesn’t just help people move from one place to another,” Frank explains. “We reconnect them to their communities, families, and sense of self.” Under his guidance, VIA Mobility Services has grown into a lifeline for countless individuals, offering more than transportation—offering the means to thrive.
Paratransit service fighting for name identity

BOULDER — Frank Bruno has an identity crisis.
Not because the CEO of Boulder-based Via Mobility Services has the same name as a British former heavyweight boxer, but because the name of the 46-year-old nonprofit paratransit service he runs is being confused with New York-based Via Transportation Inc., the company with which the city of Longmont contracted last year to run its microtransit service, Ride Longmont. That company insists on placing “by Via” on the Ride Longmont cars.
So when venerable Via vies with vendor Via’s vehicles, it can be very vexing.
The problem, Bruno said, is that Via Transportation insists that its “Via” name be displayed on the Ride Longmont vehicles, “so our riders have seen that in Longmont and think it’s us.”

In 1979, a dedicated group in Boulder County launched Special Transit — now known as Via Mobility Services — the region’s first paratransit provider. From the beginning, our mission has been clear: to connect people who can no longer drive or who live with disabilities to the places and people that matter most — medical care, groceries, senior centers, family and friends. Over time, Via became a trusted partner to cities and counties throughout the region, earning a strong and respected reputation.
Today, that reputation is under threat.
An out-of-state company, Via Transportation Inc., is now using the “Via” name along Colorado’s Front Range, despite our long-standing use and legal registration of the brand. This includes recent service in Longmont branded as “Ride Longmont – Powered by Via,” which has caused confusion among riders, donors, employees and local partners.

Nick Mangeris is catching up with a few patrons at a grocery store in Johnstown on a chilly Friday afternoon when an alert comes over his radio, prompting him to drive off to help someone in need.
His destination is a Weld County resident’s house. But he’s not an emergency medical services worker. He’s not a firefighter. He’s not a police officer. No, Mangeris is a different kind of helper. He’s a driver for Via Mobility Services, a nonprofit organization that offers free rides to residents who are 60 years old and older or those who have disabilities so they can lead a more independent, self-sufficient life.
Founded in 1979, Via Mobility Services was created to provide caring, door-through-door transportation — meaning the driver meets the rider at their door, helps them into the van, and ensures they get to their doctor’s appointment, health clinic, grocery store, social gathering, etc. But the drivers don’t just drop their riders off at the entrance to the building, they take the time and care to guarantee the person gets to the exact room they need to be in. The drivers also wait for the duration of the visit or activity so they can take the rider home and repeat the process of ensuring they get inside their home safely.

In an effort to widen transit service in Weld County, the board of commissioners recently approved an Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) with the Town of Milliken to provide shared-ride service through Via Mobility Services. Milliken is now the 10th community in Weld County to join the program.
“Via Mobility has been a fantastic paratransit service for residents of Weld County,” said Commissioner Chair Kevin Ross. “It has helped residents maintain the level of independence they desire, and adding Milliken to the service area will only increase this goal.”
In July 2023, the county approved grant funding for Multimodal Transportation and Mitigation Options Fund (MMOF) to support the county contracting with an on-demand transit provider. This program assists residents who are unable to drive or are 60 years of age or older and must rely on others to take them to appointments, grocery shopping, work, etc. Via Mobility operates buses that are equipped for paratransit service, and Via’s drivers escort riders door-to-door and assist them on and off the bus when needed.
Per the IGA, Milliken is contributing $13,455.69 to be part of the program, which also services the communities of Ault, Fort Lupton, Gilcrest, Hudson, Johnstown, Keenesburg, Kersey, Nunn, Platteville, along with residents in a large portion of unincorporated Weld County.
“Providing this option for transportation gives residents the ability to easily schedule essential and life-enhancing trips, which allows them to engage more with the community,” said Elizabeth Relford, Interim Director of Planning Services. “We’re excited to expand this service to Milliken.”
Via Mobility Services is a nonprofit organization that is funded through donations, grants and service contracts to pay for rides; rides are free for users, and riders are never required to donate. To learn more about Via Mobility Services, please go to https://viacolorado.org/.

It’s 7 am on a chilly Thursday morning in March, and Tracey Fox is mopping the floor of his bus. Tracey drives The Climb, a 24-passenger shuttle owned by Boulder County and operated by Via Mobility Services. The Climb provides free service between Boulder and Gold Hill on a fixed-route schedule weekday mornings and afternoons throughout the year. For Tracey, making sure the bus is clean and comfortable for his regular customers is a point of pride. “It’s just how I was raised,” he says as he settles into the driver’s seat.
